The Fête des Ménétriers (Fiddlers' Festival)

As early as 1390, fiddlers were coming to Ribeauvillé every year to thank the local lord for his aid and kindness. Since these ancient times, almost nothing has changed. The town still has its old houses, its castles and its annual fiddlers' visit. The musicians still come on the first Sunday in September ("Pfifferdaj") in a historical procession.
Without a doubt, this is the most colourful and exciting of the festivals in Alsace and it finishes around the fountain in the Town Hall square. And then, it is no longer water that runs in the fountain, but wine that everyone comes to share in with the glass distributed at the town gates....
